Max Scherzer Could Start Sunday For Mets

Help could be on the way for the New York Mets. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer is under consideration to make his return and start Sunday against the Miami Marlins, according to manager Buck Showalter. It’s said that Showalter will speak with Scherzer Wednesday to see how he feels following the rehab start he made with the Mets Double A affiliate on Tuesday evening.

Scherzer struck out six while walking one and allowing two runs in 3 1/3 innings for Double-A Binghamton while tossing 65 pitches in his first and perhaps only minor league rehab start on Tuesday. Scherzer said previously that he only needed to be able to throw 70-80 pitches to return to big league action. With the 37-year-old three-time Cy Young winner nearing a return to the big leagues, Trevor Williams is expected to move back to the bullpen. It would be a positive step for a Mets rotation that has been plagued by injuries especially in recent weeks.
