San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado singles

San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (ankle) is out of the starting lineup for his team’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. Machado injured his ankle running on Sunday in an incident that looked serious at the time. On Monday, the Padres expressed some optimism that Machado will be able to avoid a stay on the injured list. According to reports, Machado’s ankle is bruised but he is able to move around on it. Of course, things could change in the next day or two if Machado doesn’t show improvement, but as of now, it appears he will not need a stay on the IL. Machado is hitting .328 with 12 homers, 48 runs, 46 RBI, and seven RBI over 253 at-bats in 2022. Ha-Seong Kim is starting at third base in Machado’s place on Monday.
