Shohei Ohtani Hitless Over Last Three Games

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout and right fielder Taylor Ward

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani had a rough weekend at the plate. He went 2-for-4 in the first game of the team’s four-game set against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, then went on to go 0-for-13 with four strikeouts over the final three games of the series. Ohtani’s hitting production has been down a decent amount from his breakout 2021 campaign. Over 66 games, he’s slashing .250/.322/.461 with 13 home runs, seven stolen bases, 37 RBI and 42 runs. He’s on a 162-game pace of about 32 homers and 17 stolen bases after tallying 46 home runs and 26 steals in 2021. His slugging percentage is down from .592 last year to .461 this year. His average exit velocity is also down from 93.6 mph last year to 92.8 mph this year, but the latter clip still remains in the 95th percentile of the majors. The 27-year-old phenom should continue to deliver strong production across the board, even if he fails to replicate the gaudy numbers he put up last season.
