Brandin now Cooks for the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t have to look far to find the perfect for a game-breaking wide receiver. The Houston Texas have been shopping wide receiver Brandin Cooks for months. For his part, Cooks has asked to be traded to a contender. The stars aligned over Texas.

The Cowboys and Brandon Cooks couldn’t have found a better match if they went to EHarmony.

The Cowboys have been looking for a potential game-breaking wide receiver since they traded away Amari Cooper after the 2022 season, in a salary cap casualty. They were hoping Michael Gallup, a third-round pick in 2018, would fill that role. But coming off ACL surgery he was hampered.

Cooks had his own hope – get out of Houston. The former first-round pick of the Saints in 2014 has established himself as a legitimate game-breaking wide receiver. But the former Oregon State star, who’s been yearning to win a Super Bowl ring, knows that isn’t happening with the Texans, who are in a major rebuild.

The two Texas franchises executed a rare trade with the Texans sending Cooks north to the Cowboys for a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft and a sixth rounder in 2024. According to published reports the Texans recently restructured Cooks contract. They will pay $6 million of Cooks’ $18 million salary.

The Cowboys clearly missed Cooper last season. CeeDee Lamb emerged as a franchise wide receiver, catching 107 passed for 1,369 yards and nine touchdowns. But no receiver emerged as the No.2 option for Dak Prescott.

With Cooks, who has six, 1000-yard seasons receiving and 49 touchdowns, Prescott has a target who can stretch the field. If Gallup returns to form, the Cowboys could have the dynamic receiving corps to rival any in the league.

The move, combined the Cowboys trading for cornerback Stephon Gilmore and resigning linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is a strong sign the team will use its first-round pick on a tight end and not retain TE Dalton Schultze. Dallas and the Philadelphia Eagles should compete for the NFC East title.
