Edwin Díaz has MLB's Best Theme Song
Closers coming in to dramatic music is nothing new for Major League Baseball. Yet, under Steve Cohen's reign of the New York Mets, things feel different.
Closer Edwin Díaz failed to live up to lofty expectations early in his Mets career, but has blossomed into the league's best closer, sporting nearly impossible 2022 numbers. In doing so, he became beloved in New York. His walkout music, "Narco" by Timmy Trumpet, has elevated him from ninth-inning man to folk hero.
Most closers use their music to intimidate, branding themselves as intense, fiery, and overpowering. Díaz lets his 100+ mph fastball do the talking. His music helps lock him in, but is largely for everyone else. The theatrics, the trumpet solo, the unique showmanship of baseball under the bright lights...it's just different with Díaz. "Narco" feels celebratory, not threatening. If you are an opposing player and hear it in Citi Field, it's too late.
New York even hosted Timmy Trumpet to perform his song live when Díaz came in to close the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. There is no greater intersection of musical enjoyment and on-field dominance than the Mets closer.
