Giancarlo Stanton's Name Is...
Giancarlo Stanton was always Giancarlo Stanton, just not to everyone. Us baseball fans knew him as Mike Stanton, the ridiculously ripped outfielder with the definition of 80-grade raw power.
Then, right before the 2012 season, he asked to be called Giancarlo. The answer as to why is wonderfully simple. It’s his name!
Stanton started going by Mike during his school days, when the kids around him couldn’t pronounce his birth name. Michael is one of his middle names (Giancarlo Cruz Michael Stanton), so the transition felt natural enough. His mother, ironically enough, doesn’t adhere to either preference. She calls him Cruz.
However, Stanton came to the conclusion that, whether it be out of comfort, prominence, or pride, Giancarlo was what he should be called. Easily enough, the baseball world nodded its head and never looked back. “Mike” is now just the name on some really valuable rookie cards.
It’s almost like it's not hard to call people what they want to be called!
