Al Abroad
With a name like Al Horford, no one would be called crazy to assume the big man was born in like...Nebraska. That couldn't be further from the truth.
Horford was actually born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. As he entered his teenage years, his family moved to Michigan, where he eventually became the star of the basketball team, a two-time national champion, and an NBA All-Star. You know, the usual.
Of course, it helps when your father is Tito Horford, a former NBA player himself.
Regardless, his Dominican roots have made an impact both on the star and the communities he's touched, even as far north as Boston. The Celtics center was the first Dominican player to appear in an NBA Finals game. That summer, he had more than just Celtics fans rooting for him. He had the Dominican community behind him, both at home and in Boston. Dominican Bostonians flocked to restaurants of their heritage, appointment eating for Celtics playoff games. Rooting for Horford to make history became a bonding experience for the tight-knit group in Boston and even riled up politicians back home. Hoping for a Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy in the Caribbean took on a life of its own, even if Horford's Celtics couldn't defeat the Golden State Warriors.
