Thompson-Grade Tough
NBA rules state that a player injured prior to free throw attempts must attempt their shots (unless the foul is a flagrant), otherwise they are ineligible to return. On no bigger stage did that rule show its face than the 2019 NBA Finals.
When Klay Thompson's Golden State Warriors faced the eventual champion Toronto Raptors, every point was earned. In game six, Danny Green contested a dunk attempt from Thompson, forcing him to land hard and sustain a knee injury. He was rewarded with two free throws, but they seemed irrelevant.
He was writhing in pain on the court. He would be helped off the court and halfway to the locker room before someone reminded him of the rule. Having not heard a pop in his leg, Thompson hobbled back to the paint. He drilled both free throws to make it an 85-80 Warriors lead.
Thompson's charity stripe success would be the last shots of his season. He had torn his ACL on the previous play. Through grit, determination, and a hefty dose of adrenaline, he was able to give his team the best possible chance of winning.
Golden State eventually fell short, but Thompson's efforts would not be forgotten. His toughness is well-documented and it's safe to say he'll never have to buy himself a drink in the Bay.
