The (Luke) Kornet Contest
Aside from being a New York Knicks folk hero, Luke Kornet had carved out a fairly rudimentary trip around the NBA as a depth center.
After signing with the Knicks as an undrafted free agent, Kornet found roles as large as 17 minutes per game. Upon moving onto more talented teams, those numbers would shrink. His trip across the Eastern Conference landed him in Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Boston...twice.
It's that second trip to Boston that has granted Kornet a greater spotlight. He's still a bench guy, averaging about seven minutes per game, but has gone viral repeatedly.
How? The Kornet Contest. Kornet, upon seeing an open three-point shooter begin his motion, will abandon his post to simply jump straight in the air with his hands straight up. He calls his move "The Eclipse" as well, and it's a fitting name. Kornet is 7-foot-2. He gets in the shooter's sightline to the basket and, for a split second, defends the shot. All the while, he is no where near close enough to draw a foul, and he doesn't have to sacrifice defense elsewhere to close the gap.
It's been surprisingly effective in a small sample size, but with the world watching, it may not be long before he leaves a lasting impact on the game.
