Mahomes, Chiefs Have a Hill to Climb

For NFL fans, this was the QB-WR divorce version of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston splitting up. Say it ain’t so.

The Kansas City Chiefs had the most electrifying, game-changing passer-catcher duo in football. Aaron Rodgers to Davante Adams might have been more prolific and Tom Brady to whoever the hell he threw to was magnificent.

But if you wanted to see a game change on one, you’ve-got-to-be-spitting-me hookup, we confidently offer up Patrick Mahomes to Tyreek Hill. At 26 and 28, respectively, Mahomes and Hill had many good years ahead of them.

The Grim Reaper to The Cheetah. Game over.

Now, Hill is in Miami, richer than some folks on Singer Island, and Mahomes is in Kansas City, where he’s richer than Hill. Hope they’re both happy because Pitt and Aniston have never been the same.

The Chiefs, of course, traded Hill to the Dolphins. Mahomes now has a WR room populated by Moe, Larry, and Curly. O.K., that was harsh. JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mercole Hardman combined for 110 catches for 1,252 yards and five touchdowns in 2021.

Mahomes to Hill racked up 111 receptions for 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns. I’m no mathematician, but geez!

If the Three Replacement Amigos can negate the loss of Hill, the Chiefs have a formidable defense and the magician known as Patrick Lavon Mahomes II. It’s still Super Bowl or bust for the Chiefs.

BET BETTER WITH BETBASICS: Mahomes and the Chiefs might be in danger of experiencing The Marino Factor – a guy takes his team to the Super Bowl as a rookie and never makes it back. Mahomes and Chiefs looked like a dynasty blooming when they won the 2020 Super Bowl. They haven’t been back, losing in stunning fashion in the AFC Championship game  last season at home.

Mahomes is +900 at DraftKings to win MVP honors, behind Josh Allen, who’s at +550 at Caesars, and that was before the Bills QB opened the season by torching the Rams. The Bills are +300 at FanDuel to win the AFC. The Chiefs are more enticing at +600 to get to the Super Bowl.

Without Hill and the unproven receiving corps, we like the over on TE Travis Kelce’s 1,050.5 receiving yards. He’s had more than 1,000 yards receiving yards in each of the last six seasons. Give us a parlay of Kelce to top 1,050.5 and the Bills to get to the Super Bowl.

ACE IN THE HOLE: One of the most overlooked rookies in the league last season was linebacker Nick Bolton, a 5-foot-11, 237-pound hit machine who had 112 tackles for KC. If not for a certain linebacker by the name of Micah Parsons, Bolton would have been the rave, especially considering he was a second-round pick.

Bolton is only going to build on that rookie season. We’re setting the over/under for Bolton at 130 tackles and taking the over. Way over.

MUST-WATCH TV: All this talk about Mahomes and Allen. Last season they gave us a playoff game for the ages. Allen and the Bills won a 42-36 OT thriller that prompted the NFL to change its postseason overtime format. Each team will get to the possess the ball in OT.

There’s no guarantee the Chiefs and Bills will meet in the playoffs, but they play Oct. 16 in Arrowhead Stadium. How this isn’t a marquee network night game is a mystery. Find it. Watch it. Lose your voice.
