Joe Flacco Delivers Solid Practice, Continues Preparation

Joe Flacco

When New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson limped off the field in Philadelphia on Friday night, plenty of uncertainty about the future arose. Who would start? Was Jimmy Garoppolo going to become a possibility?

But with the news on Wilson seemingly better than anticipated, it became apparent that veteran backup Joe Flacco would assume the starting role. Wilson is scheduled for surgery on his knee Tuesday, which will determine the extent of his absence, keeping his Week 1 status up in the air. Flacco would be in line to start the opening game against his former team, the Baltimore Ravens, if Wilson is not cleared by then.

Flacco, meanwhile, has flashed in training camp practices, going 16-for-19 with an interception during the Sunday practice, per reports. He was not active for the preseason opener, but there is still uncertainty whether the Jets will risk letting Flacco play at all with Wilson already out for the immediate future. Mike White and Chris Streveler will assume most of the preseason reps going forward now if the team chooses to exercise caution with their top quarterback option at this stage.

Flacco is most likely not a fantasy option in Week 1, but perhaps could become a streaming option with a Jets offense that is expected to be improved, should he become a more long term starter. The Jets are 0-5 with Flacco as a starter over the last two years.
