The Mets starting rotation is taking another step toward becoming whole again. Max Scherzer, currently dealing with an high-grade left oblique issue, was throwing pitches on pitches on flat ground from 60 feet away on Tuesday.
Although there is no indication about when a potential rehab assignment could begin, this is no doubt a positive step for Scherzer and the Mets, especially for a rotation that has struggled at times without him. There was also potential concern after Scherzer’s dog bit him, but he expressed that it is a non-concern moving forward.
The eight-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young winner was 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 59 strikeouts and 11 walks in 49 2/3 innings over eight starts before ending up on the injured list. He still needs to get back on a mound and begin facing live hitters, but he’s getting closer. Regardless, the Mets and their fans will be eagerly awaiting his return to starting every five days.
