Panthers Are Not Shopping Sam Darnold

Sam Darnold

After being shipped out of New York last offseason, is Sam Darnold primed to find himself on the chopping block again in Carolina? Not so fast according to the Carolina Panthers, who are said to not be shopping the former USC quarterback.

Since acquiring quarterback Baker Mayfield from the Browns, the rumors have been swirling on Darnold’s future. However, for now the team appears set on keeping the first and third overall picks from the 2018 NFL Draft on the same team.

Darnold struggled in year one with the Panthers after an underwhelming tenure with the Jets. The starting job is said to be Mayfield’s to lose as a result, meaning Darnold is destined for a backup job this season. General manager Scott Fitterer said he told Darnold “not to worry” about the trade rumors after practice on Monday.

There is no telling how much interest he would covet on the open market, especially considering the fifth year option he is playing under this season, which pays around $18 million. For now, this situation is just another unfortunate turn to Darnold’s less-than-stellar career.
