The Carolina Panthers are nearing the end of the quarterback competition that never was.
Baker Mayfield is expected to be named the starting quarterback for Week 1. Mayfield will get the chance to debut for Carolina against his former team, the Cleveland Browns. Sam Darnold was the only “serious” competition for the job, but prior performance and training camp showings have given Mayfield a serious edge.
Now healthy, Mayfield can be at his best: playing as the underdog. FanDuel has -112 odds on either side of a 3,600.5 passing yards total, which will likely hinge on whether or not he plays 17 games. Mayfield has the weapons to exceed expectations, even if they don’t surpass their 6.5-win projection.
