Years, Not Salary, The Latest Hurdle For Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving

Well, free agency is about to get a lot more interesting. Although Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving still has a chance to remain in the borough, it’s certainly a less than ideal situation for a team that has plenty of offseason work to do. Irving and the front office are reportedly in agreement on money, but rumors continue to indicate that neither side has been able to make inroads on the length of the deal. It’s said the Nets prefer a shorter term deal, due to Irving’s lack of availability in recent years, while the star guard would prefer a complete max deal in length. Regardless, it’s a situation to follow that can have tremendous impact on the Nets franchise both in this season and beyond, greatly affecting the potential ceiling of the team.

Irving has until June 29 to decide on his $36.9 million player option, and remains a capable fantasy producer when he’s on the court. Unfortunately for fantasy players, Nets bettors and fans, that availability is something that is a big question mark at best. Nevertheless, the 30-year-old, who has averaged 23.1 points, 5.7 assists, and shot 39.3% from deep during his career, will still garner plenty of fantasy interest, at least from those that enjoy taking on risk.

It is no doubt one of the most intriguing storylines to follow with free agency beginning about a week from now.
