Here’s the deal about longshots. They are always fighting for everything they get. Always.
Austin Ekeler? Never stops working. Shaquille Leonard? Beast. Cooper Kupp? Please.
Washington running back Antonio Gibson from Memphis hasn’t reached the level of success of those other non-Power 5 NFL players. This is the season for him to try to get to that level. The Commanders used a third-round draft pick on Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr., a punishing runner.
Gibson came into the league as a receiver/returner more than a running back. He grabbed the role but he always seemed to have an asterisk next to his name, as in former receiver. Not this season. He’s not a hybrid weapon anymore. He’s a lead back.
"I feel like we can kinda get rid of that," Gibson told reporters. "It's Year 3. I feel confident. I'm the most confident I've felt since playing running back in the league."
