When Baker Mayfield came out of Oklahoma and was the No.1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, greatness was expected from the former Heisman Trophy winner. In fact, he would have been the first to tell you so.
Mayfield quickly signed a bunch of endorsement deals and his cocky style of play quickly made him a polarizing figure. His rookie year validated all the hype and bravado. He completed 63.4-percent of his passes for 3,725 yards with 27 touchdowns and 14 picks.
But by the end of the 2021 season, the Browns couldn’t cut ties with Mayfield fast enough. He couldn’t win the starting job in Carolina in 2022 and had some exciting moments with the Rams after Matt Stafford went down. Now the once cocky rookie is the humbled vet tasked with replacing the greatest quarterback of all time – Tom Brady – in Tampa.
"It's not how I drew my career up by any means," Mayfield told reporters. "If I was to tell you how it would go based on the plan, I wouldn't have said I'd put on three different uniforms in the year 2022, but that's how it happens.”
Mayfield will have to beat out former Florida quarterback Kyle Trask. Then he’ll have to convince his Buccaneers teammates that they can win a Super Bowl with him under center, because that’s been the standard in Tampa for the last three seasons with Brady.
"Listen, I'm never going to be Tom Brady," Mayfield said. "There's a reason he's won so many Super Bowls. He's the greatest of all time. There's no doubt about that. I'm not going to try to be Tom. I'm going to be me.”
