They say you can’t go home again but try telling that to Bobby Wagner. Wagner, arguably the greatest defensive player in Seattle Seahawks history, left the team in free agency after the 2021 season in a messy divorce. It seemed as if split was beyond repair.
But money can heal a lot of wounds. The Seahawks desperately needed an alpha dog on defense and Wagner didn’t want to be part of a rebuild after helping the Rams win a Super Bowl. Wagner and the Seahawks agreed on a one-year, $7 million deal. He just might finish his career where it started – Seattle.
Wagner has been one of the best defensive players in football, and one of the best value draft picks in NFL history. A second-round pick in 2012 out of Utah State, Wagner has led the league in tackles twice and has been a first or second team All-Pro every season he’s been in the league.
Wagner grabbed the NFL’s attention after winning MVP in the 2012 Senior Bowl. But Utah State isn’t exactly Alabama so Wagner slipped to the second round. His strength - 242 pounds packed in a six-foot body combined with 4.46 speed in the 40, faster than most running backs – allows Wagner to blow up plays in the trenches and track down ball carriers sideline to sideline.
Offensive tackle Walter Jones is considered the best offensive player in Seahawks history. Wagner has the honor on defense.
