It seems like just a season ago the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott were trying to work out a new contract. Prescott seemingly had the upper hand in negotiations. He was just 27 and had already set rookie records for rookie completion percentage and rookie passer rating. Dallas seemed poised to get back to the Super Bowl.
As the Cowboys head into the 2023 season the dynamics seemingly have shifted. Prescottās deal expires after the 2024 season and the 29-year-old is now in a position of having to prove himself once again. Heās coming off an inconsistent season in which he missed time with a broken finger and led te league with 15 picks.
The Cowboys have done a lot to surround Prescott with enough talent to help him have a bounceback season. They traded for speedy wide receiver Brandin Cooks to pair with CeeDee Lamb, who had a monster season in 2022. The hope is that WR Michael Gallup is fully recovered from a torn ACL is ready to take a major step forward.
And yes, the Cowboys remain one of the better teams in the NFC. But the conference has gotten stronger. Division rival Philadelphia made it to the Super Bowl. The San Francisco 49ers just need a quarterback to stay healthy. The Detroit Lions are on the uptick as well as the New York Giants.
This might not be a make-it-or-break-it season for Prescott and the Cowboys but itās an important one. If Prescott doesnāt play better and the Cowboys donāt win more than one game in the playoffs, another awkward contract negotiation is possible.
Prescott has done a lot for the Cowboys, including winning the prestigious Walter Payton Award. But the NFL is results-driven. Itās time for Prescott to deliver the results.
