DK Metcalf, master negotiator
Prior to the 2022 NFL season, DK Metcalf's future with the Seattle Seahawks was uncertain. Would he be traded? Tagged? Extended?
Eventually, that question was answered in the form of a three-year, $72 million extension.
Some extra credit? Metcalf bluffed his way into the contract.
When negotiating with members of Seattle's front office, Metcalf threatened a "hold in," where he would be present at training camp, but not be a full participant. This would potentially hurt the Seahawks offense as they head into a season with a new identity and a quarterback competition between Drew Lock and Geno Smith.
"I was going to be here, as much as I bluffed to John [Schnieder]," Metcalf started. "I wasn't leaving, just to let you all know. I wanted to be here."
We'll never know the how his negotiation tactic truly changed the offer he received, but more than $58 million in guarantees proves Metcalf is as talented at the negotiating table as he is on the field.
