The Philadelphia Eagles aren’t subtle in their approach to defense. They come after the opposing quarterback with a relentless tenacity. And when you think they’re done, they come hard.
Which is wht the Eagles signed DE Josh Sweat to a three-year, $40 million extension in 2021.
Sweat, coming off a career-high 11 sacks in 2022, has increased his sack total every year that he’s been in the NFL. The Eagles believe that Sweat and fellow DE Brandon Graham can continue their philosophy of getting after QBs.
The $0 million deal was certainly sweet for Sweat but the mega money could come after the 2023 season, assuming Sweat continues to emerge as one of the league’s better pass-rushing end. And the Eagles, who have nothing but Super Bowl aspirations after losing in the title game last season, 38-35, to the Chiefs, need Sweat to continue to be a relentless force if they want to realize that goal.
Philly led the league with 70 sacks but opted not to retain DL Javon Hargrave who signed with the 49ers. Hargrave also posted 11 sacks as the Eagles defensive linemen fed off each other. Philly believes it has a replacement for Hargrove in last season’s first round pick but he’s not considered a pass rusher.
Philly is counting on Josh Sweat to make opposing QB’s sweat.
