X marks the spot. Or in the case of Maxx Crosby, double X marks the spot.
If the spelling of his first name is unusual, so is Crosby’s ascent to one of the most fearsome pass rushers in the NFL. Let’s start with the first name. Crosby’s mom had already picked the first name of Max for her son. But when he came out of the womb weighing 11 pounds, nine ounces, mom added an “X.”
Crosby didn’t play at Michigan. He played at Eastern Michigan.
Crosby wasn’t a first-round pick. He was a fourth-round pick of the Raiders.
He didn’t need a year of adjustment as a rookie, posting 10 sacks.
By March, he was in rehab for alcohol abuse.
Now, two X’s mark the spots for Crosby. He has a tattoo on his right forearm which reads, “3-11-20,” the first day of his sobriety. On his left hand he has the sobriety symbol, a triangle inside a circle.
After staying sober and posting eight sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss last season, Crosby signed a four-year, $98.98 million deal. He wears No. 98 and he does have the two X’s in first name.
Crosby has a lot of other tattoos, including one of the Raiders logo. But there’s room for one more – the Lombardi Trophy.
