The Chip on Miles Sanders' Shoulder
The story heading into Sanders' 2022 season looked something like this...
Want to really tick off a running back? Utter the phrase, “Running Back by Committee,” and watch the steam come pouring out of the earhole.
That’s the situation Eagles running back Miles Sanders finds himself in going into 2022. Sanders didn’t get the most carries in 2021. Quarterback Jalen Hurts had 139 to Sanders’ 137. Kenneth Gainwell had 68 and Boston Scott had 87.
“Being consistent, being more consistent,” Sanders said. “I’m going to be honest, opportunities. I’ll just say it simple like that. I need to be more consistent but I need opportunities.
“For those who don’t know, I can still catch,” he added. “Like I said, it’s just opportunities. Just leave that there.”
Yes, Sanders doubled down on his message to coach Nick Sirriani.
Sanders was targeted just 34 times and made 26 catches last season. Gainwell was targeted 50 times and made 33 catches.
The Eagles led the league averaging 156 yards rushing per game. Philadelphia would like to see Hurts take the next step as a passer but don’t expect the Eagles to undergone a complete change in offensive philosophy.
Philadelphia will run the ball. Sanders just doesn’t want it to be by committee.
