For those who haven’t been to the state, this saying represents Vermont well. An extremely beautiful state tucked away in the Northeast. While sports betting isn’t legal there yet, there is a major effort from residents and lawmakers to get something passed soon.
Burlington is the biggest city in Vermont with roughly 45,000 people. There are no major professional sports teams in the state and only one Division 1 sports program. The University of Vermont is in Burlington and represents the entire state in D1 sports.
The Green Mountain State might be a little behind its Northeast counterparts when it comes to gambling, but there’s no penalty for being late. With the region primarily all legalized sports betting states, Vermont is one of the last pieces of the puzzle.
Currently, there is no legal gambling in Vermont. There are no land-based casinos, online sports betting or casino games allowed. The only form of gambling permitted is betting on horse races. While there has been progression towards some legalization, nothing is allowed right now.
In 2020, the Vermont Senate approved a sports betting study bill to analyze how it would work in the state. Then in 2022, lawmakers drew up a bill that would legalize sports betting. It wasn’t introduced in time but signaled favorable towards legalization.
Daily Fantasy Sports are allowed in the state after a 2017 bill was signed into law. While there are not active horse racing tracks in the state, online horse wagering is permitted. Vermont residents looking to gamble on sports legally can visit their neighbors in New York and New Hampshire.
