Jimmy Garoppolo Could Be Released

There’s nothing more important in trade negotiations than leverage, a lesson the San Francisco 49ers are learning the hard way.

They’ve officially anointed Trey Lance the starting quarterback, leaving Jimmy Garoppolo in no man’s land. The incumbent starter is dealing with recovery from shoulder surgery, but has resumed his throwing program at training camp. Of course, the 49ers would prefer to trade Garoppolo, but with few starting spots still up for grabs, no one has appeared eager to give up anything in return.

As a result, there is a growing chance that the former NFC champion is cut prior to Week 1. In the meantime, he’ll likely be held out of practices and preseason games alike as a precaution. If he were on the roster for Week 1, his $24.2 million salary would be guaranteed.

Per OddsChecker, the Seattle Seahawks are the favorite to land Garoppolo, boasting +275 odds. The Houston Texans (+400), New York Giants (+500), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+800) are also considered possible landing spots.
