Melvin Gordon III looks to complicate Broncos backfield

If you thought this was Javonte Williams backfield, you’re wrong.

Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon III is back in Mile High after signing a one-year, $2.5 million extension in the offseason and is ready to compete.

If you thought Gordon was going roll over for second-year back Javonte Williams, you’ve got it all wrong.

Gordon told reporters, “I told Broncos general manager George Paton when I was at the negotiating table, I’m not going to lay down, I’m not going to lay down,” Gordon said. “I’ve always got that mindset that I’ve got to go get it every year.”

Gordon had two 900-yard rushing seasons in his first two years with the team despite splitting carries with Phillip Lindsay in 2020 and Williams last year.

But Williams is expected to earn a promotion this year after rushing for over 900 yards in his rookie season as the 1B back behind Gordon, especially after Gordon re-signed at a pay cut from his last two seasons.

Gordon still has impressive explosion and a good combination of speed and size, and he ranks fourth among active RBs with 6,144 career rushing yards. However, Williams is expected to be the clear lead back this year, but when it comes to fantasy, be careful, nobody likes a crowded backfield.
