Ronald Jones closer to roster bubble than initially anticipated

As we roll on towards the NFL preseason, tough decisions still have to be made.

The final part of the offseason is often the gloomiest, with camp bodies and depth players receiving bad news about their job prospects for what could be the last time. According to Charles Goldman of Chiefs Wire, one player that may unexpectedly be on the roster bubble is Kansas City Chiefs running back, Ronald Jones. Many assumed Jones would securely hold onto the backup running back role and possibly challenge incumbent starter Clyde Edwards-Helaire for some touches.

However, Jerick McKinnon and Isiah Pacheco offer legitimate competition for Jones’ roster spot. Along with poor showings with the ball in his hands, Jones doesn’t offer much in the passing game or special teams. Both McKinnon and Pacheco, a rookie out of Rutgers, offer more upside in those areas.

It’s become clear that this upcoming training camp will be big in sorting out this wing of the depth chart. After Edwards-Helaire’s struggles last season, there will be opportunities to lock in roster spots as regular contributors. Per DraftKings, CEH has one of the lowest over/unders of any starting running back, with -115 odds on either side of a 700.5 rushing yard line. This next month will be significant in figuring out how realistic that number is.
