Derwin James Reaches Four-Year Extension With Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have a reputation for being frugal with their rookie contracts. Their veterans, however? That may be a different story.

Safety Derwin James inked a four-year, $76.4 million contract extension on Wednesday. The deal includes record-breaking figures in guaranteed money ($42 million) and first-year money ($29 million). James became the highest paid safety in NFL history with the deal. A possible deal breaker may have been the guaranteed money that protects him in the back end of the contract, especially given James’ injury history.

This will effectively end his hold-in and get the two-time All-Pro back on the field.

Currently, DraftKings is offering +3500 odds to win Defensive Player of the Year. Despite being incredibly talented, James’ poor odds show us that this is an award for the best pass rushers in the sport. Taking your favorite edge like Myles Garrett (+700) or T.J. Watt (+700) would be a better way to spend your money.
