Steelers Sign Diontae Johnson To Extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed wide receiver Diontae Johnson to a two-year, $36.71 million extension on Thursday.

With the offense struggling at camp, it was important for Johnson to end his hold in and return to team drills. More importantly, however, will be his presence come Week 1, where he will be asked to lead a receiving corps trying to carry a questionable quarterback room. Johnson caught 107 passes for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

The deal is curious given the average annual value is lesser than expected, especially with a franchise tag waiting for him at the end of the year. On the other hand, Johnson will double dip into free agency before the receivers that received contracts this offseason.

With a lot of money invested into Johnson, Pittsburgh may feel pressure to get him the football. DraftKings is currently offering -115 odds on Johnson surpassing 85.5 receptions. Given his high target share, new contract, and the likelihood the Steelers finding themselves in pass-heavy situations, the over is an enticing opportunity.
