One of Oregon’s slogan’s is “Oregon, We Love Dreamers.”
It was always a dream for proponents of sports betting to reach the West Coast. In 2019, Oregon lawmakers officially legalized sports betting in their state. It was the first on the West Coast to adopt legal sports gambling.
The biggest city in OR is Portland, which has roughly 640,000 people. They also host the only major professional sports team in the state, Portland Trailblazers. There are four Division 1 college programs. Oregon, Oregon State, Portland, and Portland State.
The Beaver State was able to come through for the dreamers that think sports gambling should be legalized everywhere. For that to happen, the West Coast is a huge domino. It was great the lawmakers and citizens of Oregon stepped up to start making this happen.
Yes, gambling is legal in Oregon. In August of 2019, Oregon officially made sports betting legal in the state. Under Oregon law, everything needs to be run by their state lottery. In October 2019, the lottery partnered with Scoreboard Sportsbook to run online and retail operations. OR is a single operating state so they only authorize one sportsbook.
In 2022, Oregon lottery decided to partner with DraftKings and close down their partnership with Scoreboard. Now DraftKings is the only operator in the state. Another caveat of the legal sports betting is only professional sports can be wagered on. College sports are not an option.
