Ohio residents finally could let out this chant when lawmakers legalized sports betting in their state. They had been surrounded by legalized states until 2021 when sports betting was officially made legal. Starting January 1st, 2023, Ohio residents will be able to legally wager on sports.
This is huge boost for a market swimming in professional sports teams and popular collegiate programs. The biggest cities are Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. Columbus is home to the Blue Jackets. Cleveland has the Browns, Guardians and Cavaliers. Cincy has the Bengals and Reds.
The big college names are led by Ohio State, Cincinnati, Xavier, Toledo, Ohio, Dayton, Kent State and Akron. These programs are spread across the straight and garner both local and national attention regardless of the sports season.
The Buckeye State is scattered with professional sports teams and college teams. This has created an extremely passionate fanbase across the entire state. With the teams spread out, Ohio residents will finally be able to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to the in-state sports rivalries.

Yes, gambling is legal in Ohio, but sportsbooks won’t be open until January 1st, 2023. Governor Mike DeWine signed HB 29 in December 2021 to officially legalize sports betting.
This law has authorized up to 25 mobile sportsbooks to operate within OH. The cool thing is, besides brick-and-mortar casinos, self-serve betting kiosks will also be authorized at licensed bars and restaurants across the state.
Online casino gambling is currently a gray area in Ohio. There are no OH online casinos allowed to operate within the state. However, residents are legally able to bet through online casinos that authorize United States players.
