Mac Jones suffers ankle injury in loss

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones had the rushing game of his life on Sunday, in Week 3’s 37-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He would ultimately pay the price.

Jones rushed for 31 yards and a score, an uncharacteristically mobile day for the second-year passer. His celebrations delighted fans who were otherwise upset at his lackluster passing performance, which included three interceptions.

His third and final pick of the day came late in the fourth quarter. He hopped off the field, clearly in pain and unable to put weight on his left leg. Upon his arrival on the sideline, he was immediately given medical assistance and helped to the locker room. Replay would show his ankle bent at an ugly angle.

What was Mac Jones’ injury?

It was easy fearing the worst for Jones, especially after Trey Lance’s season-ending injury from Week 2. Thankfully, though, it seems Jones avoided serious injury.

Initial X-Rays came up negative and the quarterback will receive an MRI on Monday. Head coach Bill Belichick did not provide much in terms of an update or timetable for Jones’ return.

At this point in time, it is believed Jones suffered a high ankle sprain.

While it likely will not end his season, Sunday’s injury means Jones probably won’t see the field for Week 4’s action (and possibly more). The Patriots will head to Green Bay to play Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. DraftKings currently has them as +9.5 point underdogs.

Brian Hoyer would start in place of Jones, assuming time will be missed. The veteran has been around the block a few times, including multiple stints in New England. Don’t expect him to be lost within the deep corners of the offense for the few weeks he’ll pitch in relief.

I wouldn’t bet on a questionable Patriots team to win without their starter, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an edge to take advantage of. Look out for an overcorrection in the totals department, where books may be wary of New England and a “cold” Packers offense. If the number falls below 40, take it and run.
