There is always a flavor of the month in sports, or in this case, season.
Take the wide receiver position. There was Michael Thomas and Deandre Hopkins and now there is Cooper Kupp, who’s coming off one of great seasons in NFL history. All terrific receivers, no doubt.
None have been as consistently productive as Keenan Allen. Allen has posted three straight 100-catch seasons and it would be five straight if not for a 97-catch season in 2018. Yet he’s seldom spoken as one of the game’s greats, a fact not lost on the Chargers superstar. That’s right, superstar.
“The fact that I keep getting put on this post let’s everybody know that it’s for click bait,” Tweeted Allen. “100 catches, 1k yds the pass 5 years, and 5 pro bowls straight to follow up …check your top 5 list and see if they have done the same. Stop creating a perspective and show the facts.”
The former Cal star was posting 100-catch seasons when Phillip Rivers was the QB and he’s continued to do so with Justin Herbert under center. He tore his ACL in 2016 and posted 102 catches the next season. His 106-catch season in 2021 was a career high.
So the next time a buddy starts rifling off the top receivers in the game – Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill, don’t be shy about showing the facts: Allen takes a backseat to no one.
