Patrick Mahomes Leaves Lenny the Loser Green With Envy

Green – the color of mold.

Green – the color of algae, which as a famed sports columnist once wrote was the worst thing to happen to water until synchronized swimming came along.

Green – the color of a minority of applies which are ridiculed by all self-respecting red apples.

Green – the color the Empire State Building which was lit Sunday to celebrate Philadelphia’s 31-7 demolition of the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Wait! What?

Unless New York and Philly have agreed to an exchange program in which the City of Brotherly Love sends the City That Never Sleeps the Liberty Bell for the Empire State Building, why in the world was it lit green?

For those unfamiliar with the Northeast corridor, New York and Philly have only this in common. Philadelphians hate New York because they believe their city is an overlooked afterthought – a mere stop on Amtrak between Washington, D.C. and the Big (red) Apple.

They are correct. New Yorkers don’t think there’s anything special about Philly, not even the Philly Special.

So, unless this was a brilliant P.R. ploy – the iconic landmark was lit in red following the Chiefs 23-20 win over the Bengals – this was, well, a colorblind blunder.

New York City’s Sanitation Department, whose official colors are green and white, said that the lighting was “treacherous, traitorous, and unforgivable.” Never again will I walk up the 102 floors.

If the Eagles beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, Lord help the Empire State Building employee who pushes the green button a second time. The Chiefs have been installed as 1.5-favorites.

Even though the Eagles are the better, deeper, more balanced team, The Loser will take the Chiefs and give the points.

Why? Because the gustiest quarterback, the one who willed the Chiefs to victory despite playing with a swollen right ankle the size of, OK, we’ll double down, the Liberty Bell, is the unstoppable force that won’t be denied.

The torch officially has been passed. Tom Brady is the greatest of all time. Patrick Mahomes is a few Super Bowl triumphs away from being recognized as the GOAT. His 29-of-43 passing for 326 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions was epic.

But it was the Kansas City Scramble, the five-yard run followed by the late-hit by Cincinnati Joseph Ossai, that put Harrison Butker in position to kick the game-winning, 45-yard field goal.

Mahomes limps, uh, walks, with former Knicks great Willis Reed, who famously limped onto the court at Madison Square Garden and led New York to their first NBA title by beating the Lakers in Game 7 of 1970 Finals.

His performance will be remembered along with Michael Jordan’s food-poisoned marvel in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals. Jordan posted a line of 38 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and one blocked shot in 44 minutes of a 90-88 Bulls win.

“People don’t realize how hurt he was,” Kansas City general manager Brett Veach told reporters. “We all saw the injury. High ankles are terrible injuries, and sometimes guys miss two, three weeks, and he was out there and running for a first down and a big play in the game that got us in field goal range.

“But it just adds to an already great legacy.”

The legacy can be cemented on February 12. A second Super Bowl title, a second Super

Hi, I'm Lenn Robbins, a long-time sportswriter who still holds the detention record at Bildersee Junior High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., where I was born and raised. I came out of the womb a Mets fan, was baptized a Knicks fans and through the power of TV, became a Cowboys fan, which explains why I'm in group therapy. The name of my fantasy football league team is Sexual Chocolate. Anyone who can explain the origin of said team name, please h
