Did Carlos Correa fumble the bag?
No player in baseball has had as tumultuous and turbulent an offseason as Carlos Correa. Hitting the free agent market as a highly-touted shortstop and represented by superhero agent Scott Boras, many forecasted money would start falling from the sky for Correa.
In the end, they were right, but there’s a reason we shouldn’t blindly trust the weather forecast.
Correa agreed to terms with the San Francisco Giants on a contract worth $350 million over 13 years. His family traveled with him to the Bay, and right before the press conference, San Francisco went radio silent. A medical red flag appeared during his physical, dating back about a decade–an ankle injury that has since failed to resurface.
They got cold feet and Correa was a free agent again.
New York Mets owner Steve Cohen pounced at the opportunity to make a splash signing. The Mets brought in Correa with a 12-year, $315 million deal.
Until they didn’t.
The same medical hold up blocked Correa’s path to putting pen to paper. His stalemate in Queens would eventually make him the king of Minnesota, where he agreed to, and finally signed, a 6-year, $200 million deal.
From living in San Francisco in New York to the arctic circle, Correa’s contract conundrum might have been the most frustrating news cycle of the offseason. Here’s to hoping his bat is more consistent than his signature.
