Can Daniel Jones secure the bag... again?
For all the criticism that it (justifiably) garnered, there is a reason why the New York Giants extended Daniel Jones. He had the best year of his career when it mattered most and played well enough to win a playoff game, when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings.
The question is, how much of Jones’ ascension was sustainable, franchise quarterback-level play, and how much should we credit QB guru Brian Daboll?
In the pro-Jones camp, one can point to a pretty sorry group of receivers and inconsistent offensive line play. Surface-level analytics like him, too. He effectively limited his interceptions and has, for now, calmed down his rampant fumbling issue.
However, doubts still remain. A good chunk of his EPA/Play, the advanced stat that favors him the most, signaled that he ran a lot and didn’t take many risks with the football. That isn’t inherently a good thing. He also operated an offense that was never going to feature a 20-interception passer–so those turnover totals may be cloudier than some may hope.
He’ll be with New York for the short-term, and with a solid few seasons could play himself into a market-setting contract. Whether or not that will happen is more on him than the coach that has held his hand thus far.
How do you think he’ll perform?
