San Francisco 49ers vs Atlanta Falcons Matchup
Two old divisional rivals, American geography be damned, the 49ers and Falcons go way back.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, considering one of these teams blew a 28-3 lead in a Super Bowl (hint, it wasn’t San Francisco), the 49ers have dominated the matchup, even if the Falcons are absolutely crushing the stadium competition. That’s gotta be worth something, right?
Thanks for nothing!
You have probably heard of Deion Sanders, one of the best cornerbacks to play the game, handy with a baseball bat, pretty loud. Well, he plays a key part in this rivalry, let us break it down.
After being drafted by the Falcons, and enjoying 5 successful seasons, Sanders took his talents to S̶̶o̶̶u̶̶t̶̶h̶̶ ̶B̶̶e̶̶a̶̶c̶̶h̶̶, San Francisco, and goodness me, did he let the Falcons know all about this, when he returned to Georgia. All he did was get in a fight with a former teammate, intercept the QB, run it back 93 yards, stare down the Atlanta side line, and high step his way into the end zone. Ouch.
Playoff equality
Despite a long ol’ history, these teams have only met in the playoffs twice, and have one win apiece. The Falcons beat the Steve Young led 49ers on their way to their first Super Bowl appearance (spoiler, they also lost that one). And in 2012, Colin Kaepernick (remember him!) brought his team back from a 17-0 deficit (seriously, what is it with Atlanta and big leads), in the NFC Championship, to Super Bowl 47, aka the Harbaugh bowl.
At least the fans care!
It’s been a pretty barren recent spell for both of these teams, you could argue a pretty barren existence for the Falcons, but hey, at least the fans are still invested. The 49ers Faithful have certainly been spoiled over the years, and they might need some of that belief in the near future.
The Dirty Birds might be one of the most overlooked sets of fans in the league, as lord knows, they have been through a lot, and yet they still keep showing up. You’ve got to respect that.
Love that over
Looking for some action? 5 of 6 games from 2012-2021 have seen at least 44 points scored between San Francisco 49’s and Atlanta Falcons! These teams can’t defend, which is great news for us bettors! If you see lines with +40 points… Well, we’d go with OVER. Even the 2022 game had 42 points, with Falcons beating the 49ers 28:14.
