The Last of His Kind
Much like the era of the sentry gun quarterback has come and gone, the fullback position has seen its relevancy dwindle in recent years. Not every team rosters one, even fewer are willing to pay them in free agency, and new age offenses have in some cases completely erased them from the playbook.
There is no erasing Kyle Juszczyk.
Juszczyk is the undisputed best at his position and has been for quite awhile. He is an elite utility fullback, meaning he can catch and run with skills comparable to some running backs and tight ends. He also, however, blocks with the best of them. He diversifies San Francisco's run game and is a fun toy for head coach Kyle Shanahan to play with.
However, with the direction the league is trending, fullbacks are coming into the league in decreasing rates. When they do, they are often highly specialized blockers or failed tight ends. The cyclical nature of football is the only thing keeping fullbacks from extinction, but as they enter the endangered species list, let's cherish Juszczyk. We don't know if there will ever be a fullback like him again.
