Derrick White's Incredible Journey
Have you ever heard of Parker, Colorado? Neither have I.
That's where Derrick White played basketball for Legend High School. Entering at only 5-foot-6, White was forced to play bigger than his frame would suggest if he wanted to make an impact. In fact, there's even a famous picture of him in his defensive stance, resembling a middle school child.
He balled out, earning the praise of his coach and helping elevate a relatively young basketball program. Ultimately, though, it wasn't enough. No school offered him a scholarship. He would walk on at University of Colorado -- Colorado Springs, a Division II school. He dominated there before finally getting a chance to transfer to the University of Colorado.
In that time, he had grown to 6-foot-5.
Much like his previous performances, White continued to dominate earning all-conference honors as a senior.
His NBA career took a pit stop in the G League, but eventually landed him in Boston, where he comes off the bench for a perennial title contender. Not bad for a kid who wasn't sure if he was big enough to make his high school team.
